About the Artist

Constant standing
Jon Rafman, born in 1981, is a practicing artist from Montreal, Canada. He received his M.F.A. from Art Institute of Chicago as well as a B.A. in Literature and Philosophy from McGill University. These degrees reflect the art he makes, which utilizes digital software to create gifs, videos and other digital forms of media.

The concepts surrounding Rafman’s work deal with environments, technology, and the effects they have on humans and society as a whole. Rafman is able to capture modern-day interactions and the effects of pop culture on individuals, both in real situations and virtual realities, sometimes blurring the line between the two. Specific reoccurring themes of Rafman’s are the stereotyping and fetishizing of subcultures, the way technology can archive our histories or lose it with a click of a button, and physical versus digital reality.
